"The Bay of Heist is an ecologically valuable area of approximately 50ha. Due to the construction of the eastern breakwater (in front of the Havan van Zeebrugge) between 1977 and 1985, many seaweed clusters, shells and driftwood were deposited on the then narrow beach. This formed the breeding ground for seeds of, among other things, sea rocket and sea purslane, which fixed the washed up sand. The drifting sand steadily formed low embryonic dunes. These nutrient-rich silt soils exert a great attraction on all kinds of waders and ducks." says Danny VG in habitat Sandy coast on 07.09.2021..
